Samajam of Shoranur is the First and foremost Ayurveda Hospital in India, both in terms of Medical Practice and Medical Education. Guided and led by the Ashta Vaidyas, Samajam is the only authentic place following the traditional practice in Ayurveda especially in the Kerala School of Ayurveda called Samajam Sampradayam, which had its origins in Samajam itself. Samajam, known as Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, was established in the year of 1902 by the Zamorin of Malabar and the Highness of Cochin. It had the privilege of having the service of great personalities including Shri. PS Varier who later set up Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala in the year of 1915. Popular personalities have been in the governing body of Samajam. Presently, former President H.E. Sri. KR Narayan is the lead patron.

All through the life of Samajam, it has been keeping a low profile as part of the Conservative Ayurvedic Tradition. Now that, Ayurveda has been used or misused by many, Samajam feels that it is their duty to bring the real thing to the common man. Ayurveda can not be practiced by any Tom, Dick and Harry: it requires dedication, knowledge and wisdom. Ayurveda is the Medical Science which recognizes an individual's “within” and it applies this touch of custom made approach to the individual even in a simple oil massage, where specific medicated oil has to be prepared considering the metabolic structure of the individual. Today, it has been found that many of the so called “Ayurvedic Massage Centres” practice a commercial approach of “Any oil for every one”, which is not just wrong but purely criminal.

OLD SCHOOL, NEW GRAMMAR is the approach Samajam has taken recently as part of their public awareness campaign to reach and teach the public. As part of this endeavor, Samajam now operates in Guruvayur at Nirmalyam All Suite Hotel. The idea is to give modern facility along with traditional Ayurvedic Treatment, rejuvenating or Therapeutic.
