Even
in the earlier times, most patients undergoing treatment at Shoranur
Samajam, would travel regularly to Guruvayur to worship Lord Guruvayurappan.
It is believed that the blessings of Lord Guruvayurappan along with
the Samajam treatment worked better for quick relief.
Probably
the most famous among them was Chembai Vidyanatha Baghavathar. The
noted Carnatic Music Maestro lost his golden voice and had to undergo
Samajam treatment under their Chief Physician Vaidyamadom Valiya
Narayanan Namboothiri, upon the advise of his closest friend Poomuli
Raman Nampoodiri who was a director in Samajam.
The
great Carnatic musician, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, (1896-1974)
was an ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan. He used to visit Guruvayur
regularly and always gave priority to this visit on top of public
concerts. The legend is that Chembai while performing at the temple
once, was struggling for his voice. It is believed that Lord Krishna
who is always mischievous was testing his disciple whether he would
discard his faith in a critical situation like this. Instead Chembai
became more attached to the Lord.
With
his feeble voice and wounded mind he still performed at the feet
of the Lord till he found Vaidyamatom, the Samajam Physician at
the temple itself. The legend further expands that, Lord Guruvayurappan
appeared in the Physician’s dreams and asked him to meet Chembai.
Thus Chembai was taken to Samajam for treatment. Few months of treatment
along with regular Darshan of Lord Guruvayurappan, got back his
lost voice. The special medicine formulated for Chembai is still
known as Chembai Choornam at Samajam. Afterwards Chembai became
a director in Samajam and has helped Samajam by conducting concerts
for its benefit in different places in India.
Samajam
knew the power of worship. But it is only now that Samajam got an
opportunity. This divine magic of Lord Guruvayurappan superseding
treatment, Samajam now has set up a centre in Guruvayur. Guruvayur
is considered as the Vykunta (Heaven) on earth. And even the air
carries that divine power. Hence even a single breath from this
place is believed to be most comforting and healing.
