History of Samajam

In the year 1902, the then Zamorin of Calicut, Manavikrama Ettan Raja had a celestial vision in the general health care of his subjects. He wanted the knowledge and wisdom in Ayurveda acquired by the Vaidyas, through ages of observations and learning to be made available to the common man too when it was available only to the Kings, Queens, Princesses, Princes, Land Lords and the rich. The system was that the doctor came to the patient rather than the patient to the doctor. That sparked the idea of a Vaidyalayam (hospital), where patients could go, consult and undergo treatment and get discharged once the disease is cured. The physician was also happy as they were given an opportunity to study a multitude of different kinds of diseases that too in high volume. The Zamorin then requested the service of the best and famous Ashta Vaidyas- The Legendary Physicians and other eminent personalities in Medical Practice. All of them were only happy and a “Chikitsa Yogam” – a panel of Doctors was formed under the leadership of The Legendary Thriprangode Mooss with Alathiyur Neelakantan Nambi, Chirattamanna Narayanan Mooss, Kuttanchery Aryan Mooss, Thaikat Divakaran Mooss, other eminent Vaidyas like Mooriyil Narayanan Nambisan, Ambramoli Ravunni Vaidyar, Veyiloor Sanku Varrier and to every one’s surprise 2 eminent Allopathy Doctors, Drs. CV Rama Rao and E. Rama Varrier Next was the association of the Maharajah of Cochin. Making history again the Maharaja of Cochin and the Zamorin of Malabar met at Calicut after years of gap due to the capturing of Perumbadappu Swaroopam, which was the head quarters of the Maharaja of Cochin. The meeting thus gave birth to a charitable organization, Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, formed with the involvement of The Zamorin, The Maharaja of Cochin, The Ashtavaidyas, Traditional Physicians, Allopathy Doctors and others. That was the beginning of Samajam.
